Memorial Day Weekend

We had a great weekend.  Benjamin was off of school on Friday and Monday.  Dad took Friday afternoon off so while I stayed with a napping Jacob, Dad, Emma and Benjamin set out on an adventure.  They went geocaching and then out for frozen yogurt.  They found three caches including one inside the library which was really exciting.  Here are the pictures of their adventures.

The smallest cache they found a screw

Then on Saturday we hit the zoo for a short time.  We saw the new zoo show, and Jacob was entranced by all the animals especially the birds.  I didn't expect him to sit as nicely as he did.  Score!  The only hiccups was that I brought the new camera without a memory card.  There was a spare in the bag but it was only a 512mb card.  It would only hold 9 pictures before the new camera declared it full.  So after taking and deleting we only have a few pictures of the day.

Then on Monday we ended up going swimming in the morning.  The pool doesn't allow pictures for safety reasons so no pictures of that event, but then after naps we hung out in the backyard before our  "picnic" dinner in the back yard.  Benjamin practiced t-ball and then had a sword fight with Emma.  Jacob ran around and chased everyone while I relaxed in the sun on a blanket.  It was pretty chilly and we'd wished that it had been warmer, but the kids didn't even seem to notice and loved playing outside and eating on the blanket in the backyard.

First Grade Family Night

Benjamin's class hosted a First Grade Family Night tonight.  It started with a slideshow from pictures throughout the entire school year.  Then they hosted an author share.  Every child has published books, and they stood behind their books to answer questions from parents.  The teacher had printed out great questions as prompts for parents to ask (I wish that I saved the question sheet because some of the questions were great like how much does your book cost?  Benjamin's answer to this was they are not for sale!) Then there were post-it notes and markers to write comments in the book and add it to the front cover.  It was short, sweet, and full of learning.  Benjamin was so proud to be there and to have published four books with hard covers and all!

Even though this sounds like it was the highlight of our night it wasn't at all.  Benjamin has had his front tooth loose forever.  His dream has been to lose it at school because you get a tooth necklace to keep it in.  He came home from school with it very, very loose and sticking straight out (picture Nanny McPhee).  I thought for sure it would come out during our dinner of BLT sandwiches (easy dinner to get to school at 6:00p.m.), but it didn't.  Then at school he showed his teacher.  I think she gave him to the motivation to get it out because I said that his dream was to loose it at school to get a tooth necklace.  She told him she was sure it could pull it out with a tissue.  He worked at it and worked at it and out it popped during the author share.  The room clapped when they heard the news.  Benjamin came out with his tooth safely tucked inside his new tooth necklace.

The evening ended with a trip to a fill your own yogurt/topping store.  We haven't been there in a long time, but with Jacob's dairy allergies we knew they had sorbet for him.  (I am starting to find out how complicated this allergy thing is.  We can't just head over to our local hamburger/shake store for ice cream anymore.)  The kids were in heaven because they got another spoon from the store; it is the coveted plastic spoon in the house and routinely fought over because there was only one.  We made sure to bring home all five new spoons so there can be no more arguments.

Mother's Day

We mostly celebrated yesterday because of meetings at church etc. but I did enjoy the actual day.  I received a homemade present from each of my children: Emma gave a card from preschool and a necklace from church; Jacob made a flower at church; and Benjamin created a special tea cup card from school.

12 for 12

We had a great Saturday.  I got to open my new Mother's Day present a day early so I could actually take pictures.  The lens on my old camera broke and so instead of just replacing the lens Stephen opted to get me an updated version of the camera.  I absolutely love it including the new portrait lens.  So first thing in the morning we went to a local farm and tried to do a photo shoot in the apple orchard with the new lens.  We couldn't figure out how to get in through the gate so we took it by the grapevines instead.  It was a short shoot because Benjamin had his soccer class.  We all attended and then headed home for lunch.  Stephen headed to church for a baptism, and I stayed home to put the kids down for a nap.  In the late afternoon, we headed to our favorite specialty market to pick up fixings for a gourmet picnic and then headed to our favorite park for dinner al fresco and some good running around in the rose garden.  A great day indeed!

Update on Jacob

We went and saw a pediatric allergist this week with Jacob.  The above pictures was taken after he ate raw tomatoes so we suspected dairy and raw tomato allergies.  They performed a skin test, and he tested allergic for food to dairy (cow's milk), eggs, peanuts (not severe- no epi pen needed), soy, and wheat but surprisingly not allergic to tomatoes.  They also performed environmental allergies test, and he was allergic to dust mites, cat and dog dander, regional trees and weeds, and mold.  He was put on allergy medicine (Zyrtec) and given an inhaler to use for six weeks to help his lungs to heal.  I was pretty shocked with the results but as the doctor reminded us that this could to be a definitive answer or it could be useless information.  There are such things as false positives in the test and that there can be a reaction on the skin but that ingesting the food will not harm him or just the opposite as may be case for the raw tomatoes.  For now Jacob is off of dairy, eggs, and peanuts.  We are going to wait and see what to do about the soy and wheat.  We may have to do an elimination diet and reintroduction in the future, but the allergy medicine has helped so much for his runny nose/congestion in just a few days that we are hopeful we can keep him on soy and wheat.

In other news Jacob is my most challenging toddler yet.  He is smart, agile, and inquisitive which makes for a dangerous combination in my book.  His favorite thing to do is climb, and he climbs just about everywhere he can.  The most dangerous climb that we have had was a push of a kitchen chair to the counter; then crawling along the countertop to the stove.  He was directly on top the stove and turned the oven on.  Thank heavens I was in the same room and caught him before things got anymore dangerous with him turning on a burner that he was on top of.  If he is not pushing chairs to things out of reach then he is discovering how to get around our preventative measures and play in places we don't want him in like the pantry, cupboards, drawers, or the garbage can.  He can climb out of a pack and play and also his crib.  For now, I ordered new security measures for the pantry (which knock on wood is keeping him out) and our new method of bungee cording all the kitchen chairs around the table so that they can't be used as tools for climbing.  We are keeping him in is crib by putting him in a sleep sack so he can't get his legs far enough apart to climb out.  (I am just waiting for the day that he figures out it can be unzipped.)  I feel a little we live in Fort Knox especially now that Emma is also prevented from doing her normal things like getting in places she could before, for example using the bathroom, because the new locks are too secure for her to use as well.

With all of this aside, Jacob is one happy twenty month old.  He loves to read, color, rip books and paper, run away from mom and dad, and play with whatever his older siblings are playing with.  I am trying to put a positive spin on his inquisitive mind and remind myself that it is a good character trait to develop which will serve him well in his future life.  It just may not make for an easy toddler!
