Oobleck

Stephen was home from work sick yesterday, and Benjamin thought it so unusual that Dad was on the couch that he was a little fly buzzing around him all day. I finally had to get something out that was so new and could distract him from wanting Dad to play with him. Benjamin hadn't ever played with oobleck (cornstarch and water mixture), so we made some. Laughing, dripping, and squishing was the order of the afternoon. Stephen even got up and took a few pictures of us having fun. He taught Benjamin that it was a "non-Newtonian fluid" ("fluid in which the viscosity changes with the applied strain rate" Wikipedia definition). I think that I enjoyed playing just as much as he did. The secrets of a preschool teacher need to be pulled out more often!

Rebecca, you're so good. I spend so much time cleaning up unintentional messes, that the last thing I want to do is give them a reason to make a mess! But it looks like so much fun. I should get over my OCD-ness.

Can you add food coloring to make it different colors?

I only have one to make a mess so it is much easier to do man to man! I don't know if you can add food coloring or not. I'd try it in a small sample and check to see if it stained your hands. It is very fun though both Stephen and I enjoyed playing!
